The installation, “You Because Free Instantly New,” for the 2014 ProArts 2x2 consists of figurative sculpture, textile wall installation, and audio/video projections. All of the visual iterations of my research deal with the integration of militaristic technologies and methods into the intimacies of everyday civilian life. The installation takes cues from retail design and blurs the boundaries between civilians as agents of capital and soldiers of resistance. You, because, free, instantly, are used frequently in advertising and are known as the 5 most persuasive words in the English Language.
This body of research began with a ‘single note’: a visualization of a foil (fencing) match. I had no idea what it meant at the time, and am still working through the various iterations that have unfolded since. The work has all developed from investigations into the etymology of the word FOIL.
